Come rain or shine, the South West of England has got to be one of the most beautiful places to see and visit with a abundance of attractions to cater for everyone! There are two National Parks, four World Heritage Sites and the longest coastline of any of the English regions.
From the tip of Cornwall through Devon and on into Somerset the delights of the South West are plentiful. Not only have you got all the attractions which include the Eden Project in Cornwall, Devon's Dartmoor National Park and Somerset's Fleet Air Arm Museum, you also have the hundreds of little villages, hamlets and settlements along the way. Many of which are lovely little picturesque villages with charming period cottages and full of local character.
As you would probably expect with any county you will always have the draw of the larger fashionable cities and towns with their bustling high streets. And in this case, being a group of counties, you have a lot more to visit. The city of Exeter is the capital of Devon with headquarters for education, medicine, religion, commerce and culture. Exeter is also home to the Met Office and one of the region's shopping destinations with substantial shopping facilities. Devon's largest urban settlement meanwhile is Plymouth, a naval base and shipbuilding city with a history of great maritime importance. Plymouth occupies an elegant natural position along side the Sound and is also a popular shopping destination with the Drake Circus shopping centre pulling in lots of visitors. The county town of Somerset is Taunton, the centre for the area's local government and home to the Somerset County Cricket Team. Truro is Cornwall's only city, home to administration, commerce and tourism for the county.
There are many more sizeable and popular towns in the area, many of which are also seaside towns offering additional appeal and popularity to tourists and visitors to the South West. These include Torquay in Devon, part of the English Riviera which also includes Brixham and Paignton. These help make up this scenic bay in South Devon. Cornwall and Somerset also have lots to mention including Penzance almost on the end of the peninsula and Newquay, popular with groups of young people for its night-life on the north coast. Weston-super-mare offers all the tradition of a seaside resort. And Yeovil is a long-standing market town now populated with retailers selling their wares to a bustling public.
