Compton Castle
This fortified manor house and gardens, has been home to the Gilbert family – who are related to Sir Walter Raleigh, for more than 600 years. The Gilbert family's most famous member was the English adventurer, explorer and coloniser of Newfoundland - Sir Humphrey Gilbert.
It is told that Sir Walter Raleigh, half-brother to Sir Humphrey, smoked the first pipe of tobacco on these shores while visiting Compton Castle.
The Castle which has been owed by the National Trust since 1951 on the agreement that members of the Gilbert family can continue to reside within the property, also appeared in the 1995 film – Sense and Sensibility.
